Albania: travel guide for the summer
Holidays in Albania? She is the destination of the summer. Beaches, secret bays and villages with an ancient soul. Castles overlooking the sea, archaeological sites hidden in...
Since ancient times Albania has been a crossroad between two worlds. People coming from West and East have met in this land for centuries. Shqiptaret (Albanians), despite the influences have managed somehow to maintain a unique yet peculiar identity. At home we eat only traditional food with eastern and oriental twist, at the restaurant our food is Italian, at home we drink Turkish coffee, at the bar only espresso, we like to live a relaxed life chitchatting for hours with our loved ones, yet we drive fast cars, we talk laud, but we love the silence of siesta on a hot day. Ours is a history of survival against the odds. Despite our contradictions there is one thing that prevails on every Albanian, and that is our generous soul and hospitality.
As an old proverb says: the
house of Albanians belongs first to god and the guest. You will find this spirit in every Albanian house no matter where we live.
Saranda a city of border, bonds together all these elements. The enchanting Ionian Sea in front, the mountains behind, a stack of houses, bougainvillea and palm trees. Flat landscapes and straight roads feel wrong to us. Since ancient times the city has gathered people and travellers crossing seas making contacts.
Our family, Cakalli originally from Pilur a small village on the Albanian coast, moved here on early 1950’s. Directly after the fall of communism Thanas and Vasillo Cakalli bought the land of what once used to be the city’s amusement park known by the locals as ‘Kendi I Lojrave’ and turned it in one of the first accommodations in Saranda. In years they build two hotels that now are managed from their sons and grandchildren.
Since 1992, for three generations, our family run hotel has been hosting travellers from all over the world.
Looking after guests, introducing them to the things locals love to eat and drink, telling them our stories and listening to their own – these are natural extensions the family villa had always offered to friends and guests. We never lost the sense that this is our home and that those who visit us here are our honoured guests.
WE HOPE WE NEVER DO!
